Lion Dance vs Dragon Dance: The Difference

Lions have 2 dancers in one costume, dragons need 9 or more on poles. Which to book for your Singapore event, and when to combine both.

People use the names interchangeably. The animals could not be more different. A lion is two performers inside one costume, an animal with personality that interacts with your guests up close. A dragon is a long puppet on poles carried by 9 or more performers, a spectacle that needs space and rewards distance. Which one you book depends entirely on the event.

Book a lion when...

The event is about a doorway, a blessing, or interaction: openings, home visits, weddings, office CNY blessings. Lions perform the rituals, cai qing, eye-dotting, orange presentations, and they work close, greeting guests, posing with children, saluting your VIPs. Most bookings in Singapore, including most of ours, are lion bookings, from SGD 588.

Book a dragon when...

The event is about scale: gala dinners, countdowns, festivals, National Day events, big anniversaries. A 9-section dragon weaving figure-eights through a ballroom or across a field is a stage act, and the LED version at night is the most photographed thing we do. Dragons start from SGD 1,888 and need roughly a 10 by 10 metre clear area for full patterns, details on the dragon dance page.

Or combine both

The combined show is our most booked large-event format: lions handle the rituals and the close-up charm, the dragon delivers the finale. From SGD 2,688, it covers every base, tradition, interaction and spectacle, in one 40 minute programme. If you are unsure which fits your event, describe it to us on WhatsApp and we will tell you straight, including when the cheaper option is honestly the better one.

What Each Photographs Like

Lions win close-ups: the blink, the greens burst, a child's face meeting the lion's. Dragons win wide shots: the figure-eight under ballroom chandeliers, the LED serpent glowing across a dark lawn. If your event lives on social media afterwards, think about which frame you want on top, intimate or epic. Corporate content teams increasingly book the combined show precisely because it feeds both: ritual close-ups for LinkedIn, the dragon finale for the sizzle reel.

A Decision Shortcut

Under 100 guests or a doorway occasion: lion. Over 300 guests, a stage, or an outdoor field: add the dragon. Between those, decide by the moment you want people to remember, a blessing received or a spectacle witnessed. Budget answering both: the combined show from SGD 2,688 remains our most rebooked large-event format, and repeat bookings are the most honest metric a troupe has.
