The colour of a lion is a character sheet. Traditional southern lions map to the three sworn brothers of the Three Kingdoms: the yellow lion is Liu Bei, wisdom and benevolence, the red lion is Guan Gong, courage and righteousness, and the black lion is Zhang Fei, youth and fighting spirit. Choosing colours used to be serious protocol, today it is mostly about matching the occasion, but the meanings still matter to many hosts.

Common choices in Singapore

Red and gold lions dominate corporate events and CNY, courage plus prosperity is exactly the message a business wants. Yellow or golden lions suit anniversaries and openings, the elder statesman blessing a milestone. Black-and-white lions, energetic and sharp, appear at competitions and youth events, their routines are typically the most acrobatic. For weddings, many couples pick one red and one gold lion, a pairing read as passion and fortune together.

Modern and LED lions

Contemporary troupes, ours included, also field lions in pink, blue, green and full LED skins for night events. Purists raise an eyebrow, guests raise their phones. For a gala dinner with the lights down, an LED lion is unbeatable, and nothing stops you pairing one traditional lion with one modern for the best of both.

Our advice

Match the occasion, not just the palette: red and gold for business fortune, yellow for milestones, a mixed pair for weddings. Tell us your event theme on WhatsApp and we will suggest the pairing, at no extra cost for standard colours.

Reading a Lion Beyond Its Colour

Colour is the headline, but connoisseurs read the details. The beard tells age and temperament: a white beard marks a wise elder lion that moves with dignity, a black beard marks a young lion that fights for its greens. Hok San lions have shorter horns and rounder faces built for expressive, playful routines, Fut San lions carry taller horns and fiercer lines suited to martial displays. Ask a troupe which school their routines draw from, if the answer comes back confident and specific, you are dealing with performers, not costume renters.

Choosing for Your Event

Our standard advice by occasion: red and gold pair for CNY and corporate work, it reads as courage plus fortune and photographs perfectly against banners. Gold single lion for home blessings and milestone anniversaries. Red plus black for events wanting energy, product launches, sports events. LED lions after dark, full stop. Standard colours carry no surcharge with us, tell us your theme on WhatsApp and we will match the pride to the room.
