Yes. Lion dance performances happen in HDB estates across Singapore every Chinese New Year. The key is where exactly you perform: inside your flat needs nobody's permission, while void decks and common areas fall under your town council, which typically grants approval for festive performances when asked in advance.

The practical rules

Keep performances to reasonable hours, we recommend between 9am and 9pm, and expect the whole visit to take under an hour. Drums are loud by design, so a considerate setup matters: we position the percussion away from bedroom windows where possible and can play a reduced-volume arrangement for indoor home blessings. For void deck shows, the town council application is straightforward and we can guide you through it, most approve within a few working days for CNY period requests.

Home visits inside the flat

A compact single-lion format works beautifully inside a flat: the lion blesses each room, performs a short cai qing at your doorway, and presents oranges to the family elders. No approvals needed, though your neighbours will absolutely know it happened. Many families book us right after they collect keys to a new flat, a housewarming blessing is one of our most meaningful jobs.

Booking for an HDB address

Tell us your block layout and where you want the show, corridor, void deck or inside. We have performed at hundreds of HDB addresses and know how to make it smooth with minimal fuss. Start with a message on WhatsApp.

Arranging a Void Deck Show, Step by Step

Step 1: confirm your date and slot with the troupe first, town councils process faster when the request has specifics. Step 2: write to your town council with date, time window, exact void deck location and expected crowd, we provide a template and our insurance letter. Step 3: approval usually arrives within a few working days during CNY season. Step 4: tell your immediate neighbours the day before, a two-line note in the lift lobby turns potential complaints into an audience. Step 5: on the day, we arrive 45 minutes early, set up away from bedroom-facing walls, and finish within the approved window.

Noise Etiquette That Keeps the Whole Block Smiling

The drum is the blessing, but nobody needs it for an hour. Our HDB format runs 20 to 30 minutes of actual percussion, with the loudest sequences front-loaded in the first ten. We skip the drums entirely during setup and teardown, keep gong strikes for the ritual peaks, and for corridor performances we use the smaller drum that carries festivity without rattling windows three floors up. Weekday shows before 8pm and weekend shows between 10am and 6pm draw essentially zero complaints in our experience.

Estate Events and RC Celebrations

Residents' committees and grassroots organisations book the bigger format: multiple lions, God of Fortune walkabout, sometimes a dragon for the estate's main CNY event. These run under the RC's own venue arrangements, which simplifies approvals, and the budget is often shared across the community programme. If you sit on an RC and want a quote for CNY 2027, our multi-lion estate packages start around SGD 1,500 and we handle the full runsheet, see the price guide for components.
