How to Choose a Lion Dance Troupe in Singapore

Seven checks that separate professional lion dance troupes from cheap ones: live percussion, insurance, fixed quotes, venue experience and more.

Every troupe looks similar on Instagram. The differences show up on your event day, and by then it is too late to switch. Here are the seven checks we would run if we were hiring, yes, including on ourselves.

The seven checks

1. Live percussion, minimum four players. A lion dance with two musicians or, worse, a speaker, sounds thin and looks cheaper than it costs. Ask how many percussionists are included.

2. A fixed quote in writing. The price should include transport, props, cai qing set and all performers. If the quote is a starting number with add-ons revealed later, keep looking.

3. Public liability insurance. Any troupe performing at malls, hotels or offices needs it, and venues will ask. If a troupe cannot produce an insurance letter, your venue may cancel the show for you.

4. Venue experience. Ask whether they have performed at your type of venue. Ballroom acoustics, mall permits and HDB noise etiquette are all learned the hard way.

5. Punctuality process. Auspicious timing is the whole point. Ask when the troupe arrives relative to showtime, the professional answer is 45 minutes or more.

6. Ritual completeness. Cai qing, proper bows, scroll reveal, orange presentation. A troupe that skips rituals is a costume act, not a lion dance.

7. A named coordinator. One person on WhatsApp who answers, from enquiry to show day. Call centres and slow replies before booking only get worse after payment.

Where we stand

We built Singapore Lion Dancers around exactly these seven points, live percussion always, fixed quotes always, insured always. Run the checks on us and on anyone else you shortlist, then decide. Our prices are public, which is itself check number eight.

Red Flags Hiding in Quotes

A 'from' price that will not become a fixed number after you give full details. Transport quoted separately by postal code. Percussion described vaguely, 'musicians included' without a count. Cai qing listed as an add-on. No mention of insurance until you ask, then a delay. A deposit demanded in full rather than 50 percent. Any of these alone is survivable; two or more and you are reading a quote engineered to grow after you commit. The cleanest test remains public pricing, a troupe that publishes its rates has nothing to reveal on show day.

Five Questions to Send on WhatsApp

Copy these into your first message and the replies will rank your shortlist for you. One: what exactly is included at this price, performers, musicians, props, transport, rituals? Two: how many percussionists play live? Three: can you send your insurance letter for my venue? Four: what time do you arrive for a 10am show? Five: what happens if it rains or I must reschedule? A professional answers all five specifically within hours. Evasive answers now predict evasive answers in February when it matters.

Instagram vs Reality

Highlight reels show every troupe's best 30 seconds. What they hide: whether the drums were live or dubbed over in editing, whether that pole routine was their team or a competition clip, and what the other 25 minutes of the show look like. Ask for a full unedited performance video, any working troupe has dozens on a phone. Then check reviews for the words that matter: punctual, responsive, smooth, and read the negative ones for the pattern, late arrivals and surprise charges are repeat behaviours, never one-offs. Our own receipts: performances across Singapore, published prices, and this article as the checklist we invite you to use on us.
